May-Mother's Day Cards

Honor your mother or another special woman on Mother's Day and help break the cycle of domestic violence.  Make a donation to the Shelter for Help in Emergency, and we will send a card to the woman you have chosen to honor, notifying her that your gift helped a women take a step toward a safer life.  A gift of $45 will help the Shelter to provide one night of safe housing, counseling and support for a woman in crisis.  If you choose, you may donate additional nights of shelter at $45 each.  For more information call (434) 963-4676 or download a form.

October-Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Each year we sponsor the following events and activities: Candlelight Vigil, VIVA public performance, "Peace on Earth Begins at Home" Art Contest, PEACE week (Police Education and Awareness in Communities Everywhere), and 5K Run for Shelter.

5K "Run for Shelter"--Held on the first Saturday in November on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, this fundraising and awareness event draws 200-300 dedicated runners and supporters of the Shelter.  After the 8:00 am race finishes, all runners are welcome to stay for a chance to win one of many, many grab bag prizes donated by area businesses.  This is always a fun and successful event thanks to many generous businesses and volunteers.  Click here to download registration form (in .pdf format). Or visit http://bit.ly/Shelter5K for more information or to register online.

5K T-shirt Design Contest--Each year several area schools are invited to submit entries in our 5K T-shirt Design Contest.  Following the theme "Peace on Earth Begins at Home", students create a picture which is then considered for our race t-shirt.  At a reception held at one of the schools, the t-shirt design winner is recognized as well as prizes in each grade level that participated.

PEACE week (Police Education and Awareness in Communities Everywhere)--A week in October dedicated to celebrating the police officers who work in our community and to educate them around the issues of domestic violence.

VIVA Public Performance--During October the teen peer education program VIVA, Voices for Interpersonal Violence Alternatives, presents a public performance of their high school presentation.  VIVA utilizes theater to bring the issues of dating violence and sexual assault to middle and high school students.

Each October, the Shelter for Help in Emergency recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  It is a time to remember victims and honor survivors; it is a time to acknowledge those who have dedicated their time and energy to helping end domestic violence; and, it is a time to remind people that domestic violence is a community problem and one that we all must take an active role in if we hope to make a change.

Candlelight Vigil--Held on the first Monday in October in a park in downtown Charlottesville, this time is set aside to honor and remember victims and survivors of domestic violence.
