Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Please mark your calendars and join us this October for a series of events designed to bring awareness, spark discussion, and honor those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence.

 

We begin Monday, October 3 at the Freedom of Speech Wall located on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.  Staff and volunteers will be available that day to pass out materials and answer your questions about domestic violence.  Join us and write your own message of hope and support on the chalkboard.

Our 26th Annual Candlelight Vigil will be held on Monday, October 3 at 7pm in Jackson Park.  The Charlottesville Women’s Choir will uplift us with their voices as we honor victims and survivors of domestic violence.  A reading of names will take place for the 76 victims in our community who lost their lives experiencing domestic violence since 1979.  If you are interested in speaking or reading a piece of poetry, please contact us at (434) 963-4676.

Each Wednesday during October we will hold a Brown Bag Lunch Series from 12 noon to 1pm at our Community Outreach Center.  These brief educational presentations serve to highlight specific issues faced by domestic violence victims and their children.  All are free and open to the public; we encourage you to bring your lunch and take part in these informative discussions.

Our annual Peace on Earth Begins at Home Art Contest is an exciting opportunity for youth to join in the discussion on what a healthy relationship looks like.  The grand prize winner will have their artwork showcased on both our 5K race t-shirt and our 2017 notecards.

We will wrap up the month with our 20th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Shelter on Saturday, November 5.  The run/walk begins on the Downtown Mall at 8am.  Each pre-registered participant receives a long sleeve cotton t-shirt and an opportunity to win one of our fabulous grab bag prizes.

 

School Supplies Needed

Our School Supply Closet is running low! The Shelter provides a new bookbag loaded with supplies to children entering the Shelter each fall. This small gesture gives them the necessary tools for a successful school day and helps to create a sense of normalcy for them, aiding in their recovery from the trauma they have experienced. Please help us refill our school supply closet! Don’t forget to take advantage of the Back to School Tax Free Holiday  August 5th-7th!

5K Run/Walk for Shelter

When:   Saturday, November 5, 2016

Where:   Cville Downtown Mall     Start:    Mudhouse Coffee Shop     Finish: Jefferson Theater

Cost:  $25 on or before 10/18/16; $30 after 10/18/16 and on race day.  Long sleeved T-shirts only guaranteed to runners/walkers pre-registered by 10/18/16.

Registration:   Race Day Registration from 7:00 – 7:45 a.m. near Jefferson Theater.  Entries accepted by mail on or before November 3rd and at RMRS until 3 pm on November 4th.   Online registration available, convenience charges apply.   You can also download a registration form here.  View a map of the race course.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for our upcoming 5K Run/Walk for Shelter in November! For a minimum sponsorship of $500, your business will have their name and logo on the back of the race t-shirts given to all participants, receive two complimentary race registrations, get announced on race day as we thank our sponsors, be featured in social media posts between now and race day, be listed with other sponsors in our newsletter which goes out to over 2500 people, and be named in our thank you ad in the Daily Progress after the race.
