Purple Purse Campaign

The Shelter is excited to participate in The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge.  This friendly fundraising competition helps us to raise money for the Shelter and gives us a chance at winning up to $50,000 in prize money over what is donated!

You can help by visiting our Purple Purse site and making a donation and/or signing up to be an online fundraiser for the Shelter.  Once you sign up and set your fundraising goal just send the link to friends and family letting them know what a donation to the Shelter would mean to you.  The person who raises the most money for the Shelter will win a limited edition purple purse designed by Serena Williams worth $400.

Imagine waking up one day and realizing that your only companion is fear–fear of your partner, fear for your safety and fear for your life. You have no place to go and no one believes you.

This is the reality that victims of domestic violence experience daily. No one deserves to be abused. The Shelter for Help in Emergency provides a place to turn. We offer safety, shelter and hope to victims of domestic violence and their families.

Since 1979, the Shelter for Help in Emergency has worked to support and empower victims of domestic violence in Planning District Ten (City of Charlottesville, and counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson) through a combination of residential and community-based outreach services including a 24-hour Hotline, emergency shelter, legal advocacy and court accompaniment, supportive counseling, outreach to the Spanish-speaking community, resource assistance, and information and referrals.  Each year, we respond to over 1,200 hotline calls, provide 5,000 nights of safe shelter to more than 200 adults and children, and assist many other victims of domestic violence through our outreach services.

All services provided by the Shelter are free of charge and confidential.

Your donation will enable us to continue ensuring that victims of domestic violence will continue to have access to the full offering of programs and services the Shelter provides in our community!

A gift from you would provide:

$25 – a backpack and school supplies for a child starting a new year or moving schools.

$75  – one night of safety, food and comfort to a mother and children in our shelter.

$100 – support and advocacy to a victim attending a court hearing.

$250 – one week of support and advocacy to help a child heal from abuse.

$750 – one week of safe shelter to a family, including food, clothing and crisis counseling.

$1,000 – one month of the Shelter’s 24-hour Crisis Hotline costs.

$5,000 – teen dating violence prevention services to area middle and high schools.

Please help us continue the work of our mission to end domestic violence in our community. Your gift, however big or small, will have an impact and ensure that no one at risk is on this journey alone.  Thank you!

I would like to make a Purple Purse donation to the Shelter!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Please mark your calendars and join the Shelter for Help in Emergency this October for a series of events designed to spark discussion, bring awareness, and honor those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence.

We begin Monday, October 2nd, at the Freedom of Speech wall located on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.  Staff and volunteers will be available that day to answer your questions about domestic violence and provide resources. Join us and write your own message of support on the chalkboard.

Our 27th annual Candlelight Vigil will be held on Monday, October 2nd, at 7pm in Justice Park. The Charlottesville Women’s Choir will uplift us with their voices as we honor victims and survivors of domestic violence. A reading of names will take place for the 78 victims in our community who lost their lives to domestic violence since 1979.

Each Wednesday during October we will hold a Brown Bag Lunch Series from 12noon to 1pm at our Community Outreach Center. These brief educational presentations serve to highlight specific issues faced by domestic violence victims and their children. All are free and open to the public; we encourage you to bring your own lunch and take part in these informative discussions.

Our annual Peace on Earth Begins at Home Art Contest is an exciting opportunity for youth to join in the discussion on what a healthy relationship looks like. The grand prize winner will have their artwork showcased on both our 5K race t-shirt and our 2018 notecards.

We will wrap up the month with our 21st annual 5K Run/Walk for Shelter on  Saturday, November 4th. The run/walk begins on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall at 8am. Each participant receives a long sleeve cotton t-shirt and an opportunity to win one of our fabulous grab-bag prizes. Download a 2017 5K registration form.  Register online.  See the 5K race map.
