Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day thank her for her unwavering support by passing it on!

Each year, the Shelter for Help in Emergency provides support services to over
400 women and children through our residential and outreach programs.

YOU can help us make an impact this Mother’s Day by giving the gift of safety, time, and peace of mind to a mom and her children fleeing their abusive home!

A donation of $45 to the Shelter for Help in Emergency provides one night of security and refuge, a night of restful sleep without abuse, and an opportunity to regain the strength and confidence needed on their journey ahead.  For each night of safety provided, the Shelter will send a personalized card to the women in your life you choose to honor this Mother’s Day.

You can purchase your Mother’s Day card online through our Mother’s Day website, download a form to mail back to the Shelter for Help in Emergency, or call Jenny at (434) 963-4676.

Did you know…

  • Most of the women who come to the Shelter are mothers fleeing violent homes with their children.
  • Each year the Shelter provides 4,000 nights of safety for over 200 victims of domestic violence and their children from the central Virginia area.
  • In Virginia, many who requested shelter from domestic violence programs last year had to be turned away due to lack of space and funding.
  • 82% of Americans say that they would do something to help reduce domestic violence if they knew what to do.

Support the work Shelter and help a woman and her children break free from the cycle of abuse.

As the Shelter’s signature fundraising event, Design House helps to sustain the Shelter’s services and programs while educating the community about its work.  With Design House, we hope to offer a tangible reminder of the home we would wish for each person in our community: a haven of love and laughter, free from fear and violence. No matter how different the structures of our dwellings may be, surely they can all share that quality at heart, because peace on earth begins at home.

Each year, a Charlottesville-area homeowner generously extends the use of his or her house for the Design House event.  Designers and their vendors, assigned to individual rooms and spaces inside and out, showcase their talents and the latest in design styles and techniques. The result is a unique tour for visitors where each room or garden reflects a designer’s creative vision and provides endless and inspiring ideas for the home. In addition to touring the house there will be daily seminars presented by local artists and skilled professionals on topics related to home décor, entertaining and design.  Once again Design House is pleased to offer an onsite Café providing light refreshments and fresh lunch items, as well as the Boutique where visitors will be able to purchase items to begin their own design projects at home.

Tours are open to the public May 5th-20th.  Tickets are available for purchase at $20 for a single tour and $45 to come as often as you like – the latter being the best option for those who plan to attend more than one seminar.

There will be a Preview Party on May 3rd, from 6pm-8pm, which will include a tour of the house with an opportunity to talk with each designer, a wine bar hosted by Pollak Vineyard, cocktail hors d’oeuvres by Harvest Moon Catering, and a Silent Auction.  Items up for auction include a UVA Athletics Football and Tailgating Package for Six, a Devils Backbone Brewery Day for Four with a Private Tour and Lunch, a Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery Private Tour and Tasting for Eight, Three Nights on the Town Entertainment Package, and many other exciting items.  Tickets for this event are $100. Download an RSVP form here, please RSVP by April 20th.
